For the best women’s walking shoes for travel in Europe, you need to keep reading. This is a subject that kept me awake for weeks before my recent trip to Greece!

Waterproof, YES!

My first panic hit a couple weeks before our trip, which was April. We were told the weather was going to be glorious…then the forecast starting hinting at rain the entire time. But I didn’t have waterproof shoes!! What the hell was I thinking?!
If you know me, you know I’m a Type A researcher who always wants everything to be perfect. Yeah, those aren’t high expectations to meet or anything!
My husband tried to tell me I could wear my many years old winter boots, hahahahaha. Has he just met me?! Besides which, I was NOT wearing clunky black winter boots in Greece in April. I already knew I was going to look like a tourist, but I sure as hell was not doing that.
So began the search for waterproof shoes that would be cute AND extremely comfortable. We were doing a group tour that included a lot of walking (we had already been warned well in advance). Everyone knows that wet feet are the kiss of death no matter what you are doing, especially while traveling.
**Parthenon and unexpected downpour. Did you know that everything in Greece is made of marble? And that it’s slippery AF when wet?**
My initial google of “best women’s walking shoes for travel in Europe” was less than helpful. So I knew I was on my own.
I scoured all my favorite sites and guess what? There are NOT a lot of shoes that fit my parameters.
Until I stumbled on the holy grail of waterproof shoes and I couldn’t hit order fast enough.

** The Parthenon was crowded even on a rainy day. But apparently this was nothing compared to summer!**
We were outside in the rain for a couple of hours. Thanks to planning ahead (yes I was patting myself on the back…I mean, some people were wearing shorts and tank tops!!) my feet were dry and warm and I had zero complaints (which is also rare for me, ha!)
And did I mention they also weren’t slippery on that wet Greece marble?

Comfortable?
**Santorini – one of the most beautiful places on the planet.**
Because they were a last minute order, I didn’t have time to break them in. I have finicky feet and a slightly wide toe box, so finding comfortable shoes can be a challenge.
But the design of the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex® Waterproof Running Shoe is so good that it was as though I had owned and worn them for years. ZERO break-in time required, zero blisters…even after entire days of walking and exploring.
**Mount Lycabettus at sunset. With a population of over 3 Million, Athens is a sea of (white) houses as far as the eye could see.**
Afterwards, we decided (four of us) that we could walk to a recommended restaurant. It was dark by this time, and being stupid tourists, we didn’t think about stranger danger (it was a looong walk and not the nicest area). Up many stairs and down many stairs, it was the walk that never ended. And if you’ve never been to Athens, let’s just say it’s covered in graffiti, and not all of it is exactly welcoming, haha!
We weren’t to be deterred – we were hungry, and had two strong men with us (even though said strong men were walking in the front, leaving me to bring up the rear…hmmmm).
This is the point in the movie, when a character walks into the dark alley and you say “this is so unrealistic – no one is that stupid!”…turns out some people ARE that stupid!
If you haven’t seen John Wick 4, the amount of stairs reminded me of the end of the movie. I would be in such good shape if I just walked that city every day (and stopped eating all the amazing Greek food).
Finally we arrived at our destination, the most gorgeous restaurant we’d ever seen…only to be told they were 100% full and there was no chance we’d be getting a table.
So we kept walking, and walking, and walking, until we were finally back at our hotel, and that’s when we just decided that hotel food was the best thing ever.

I don’t always wear Nike shoes, because they can be a bit tight in the toe box (mine is slightly wide), but these are seriously perfect. I did size up to 8 (which I often do for sneakers and boots) for extra room and I couldn’t have been happier. Seriously, these are probably the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn.
The ankle of these sneakers are made of a sock-like material. This means I had zero break-in time plus no rubbing or blisters. I wore them almost exclusively for ten full days and my feet never got tired, even after miles of walking each day.
They come in a lot of fun colors (more than shown here).
And they also have a version for men! I’ll be ordering for my husband to try next! He was jealous because his Hoku’s weren’t waterproof! Shop Men’s Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GORE-TEX at Nike here or at Nordstrom here.

Final Thoughts
**Walking tour of Athens – so much beauty and history.**
Even though I was hesitant to spend more money right before our trip, I am so very thankful I ordered the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex® Waterproof Running Shoe. They truly are the best women’s walking shoes for travel in Europe!
When traveling, we never know what kind of weather we may come across, and being waterproof was a serious bonus as we had several unexpected rain days, and I was one of the few people in the group who had totally dry feet.
But more importantly, these shoes are comfortable for wearing every day for many hours on rugged terrain (let’s face it, Europe is covered in lots of rough and often slippery surfaces). These shoes allowed me to access all the hikes, walks, and outdoor terrain we came across. I could not have been happier.
And as someone who likes fashion, I think they are also really cute! No matter what, you will look like a tourist, but might as well be comfortable and cute while doing so!
Oh, and our kids want to go to Disneyland this month (ages 17 and 20) – guess what shoes I’ll be wearing?
