Style For Women Over 50 – The Ultimate Truth

My take on style for women over 50 might not be quite what you are expecting, but I hope it’s helpful, nonetheless!

During a recent Trader Joe’s visit, a cute young woman (everyone’s younger than me these days) came up to me and said “I hope this isn’t weird, but I think you look so cute”. Um no, not weird at all, and thank you!

Let’s just say that little comment made my entire night!

50 – Then and Now
Style For Women Over 50

I recently read an article that the actors in The Golden Girls were between 50 and 55 in their first year of the series. I remember watching it with my mom (I was 13) and thinking they were old!

Just Like That / Golden Girls

In the Sex and the City reboot (And Just Like That…) the actors are in a similar age range. And God Bless those Golden Girls, but you can’t deny the difference between then and now.

And it got me thinking – how did we get here?!

Attitude – I Don’t Give A F*ck

Something happened to me in the last few years. As I got closer to 50, my attitude was changing dramatically. Stuff that used to bother me immensely was all of a sudden meaningless.

I cared less what people thought of me. I had more freedom to do what I wanted. And I prioritized my own needs over almost everyone else’s (except sometimes my pets and my family, ha!)

Some of this has been due to taking charge of my mental well-being (my story with Lexapro is here), but I also gained a confidence with age that I’d never had before.

Most importantly – 50 certainly doesn’t feel old. It feels Fucking Fabulous.

What Should I Wear?

If you Google Style For Women Over 50, you’ll be flooded with articles telling you what to wear, how to wear it, and especially what not to wear.

I can’t believe I used to buy into it all! And it really is crap. Because let me put it out there – you should wear exactly whatever the f*ck you want to wear!

In my opinion, the only rules are:

1. Wear what you love
2. Wear what makes you feel amazing

Nothing else matters, regardless of what anyone says. End of story.

Hair

On one particular visit from my MIL, out of the blue, she said “you know you’re going to have to cut your hair short when you’re older”.

My husband immediately jumped to my defense saying it was a ridiculous thing to say.

And look, I don’t care what anyone does with their own hair – long, short, dyed, natural grey, purple and green – whatever! But I sure as hell am not going to let anyone else dictate what my hair should look like.

So for now, while I will forever hate washing and blow drying it, I love it long and dyed and highlighted, thank you very much!

Final Thoughts

Thankfully this attitude is becoming the norm, and I’m here for it. There are now many wonderful voices supporting this next phase. One of my very favorites is Wendy from Goodbye Crop Top.

You can find her podcast here, including my favorite quote:

Fifty is not the new 40. Fifty is the new 50 and this is the point of Goodbye Crop Top, a podcast about style and aging—and aging with style.

Never let anyone dim your light.

  1. Yes to all of this! I just turned 50 and my my daughters are 16 and 19 and we wear a lot of the same things. And i cannot get over the fact that the Golden Girls were 50-55 when they started. What a stark contrast to the SATC cast!

    • I LOVE that you and your daughters wear a lot of the same things. I’m so over anyone telling me what I can and can’t wear. We are living in a totally different world than the Golden Girls time, right? I just saw that designer Carolina Herrera said women over 40 shouldn’t have long hair or wear denim. Boy would she hate me, hahaha!
