I much prefer Fall over Summer, so I’ve spent too much time obsessing about denim trends 2023 and wanted to share some of my favorites!
Denim Trends 2023
I have embraced wide leg denim for a number of years, and have now moved completely away from fitted denim. In fact I sold or donated most this summer. Loose denim is just undeniably more comfortable to me, and at age 51, comfort is king.
I hate using the word “trends” because I think if you buy something you love, that’s what’s important and you’ll keep wearing them year after year.
Trust your instincts – if it’s not a Hell Yes, it’s a NO.
My advice – try all the styles that appeal to your heart, but choose wisely what to keep. You don’t need 17 pairs of jeans…you’ll be happier with a few pairs that make you feel amazing.

Barrel
I think barrel jeans are definitely the most bold of all the styles. They aren’t for the faint of heart, to be sure, but if you love denim, are bored and looking for something a bit more exciting, they are worth a try!

After trying several brands, I thought barrel jeans weren’t for me, but I ended up falling deeply in love with the Tibi Sid in Black. I sized up to 28 and they fit perfectly slouchy! Even better, they designed them with snaps at the back of the leg so that you can adjust the length depending on how flat or high your shoes are. This is one of the best inventions I’ve ever witnessed and will change my life for sure.

I haven’t tried these myself, but a good blogger friend is obsessed and swears by them!

Wide leg cropped denim is one of my favorite, easy-to-wear styles, and my current favorite pair are wide straight cropped. I bought this R13 pair on deep sale this summer and I’m obsessed.

Carpenter
Carpenter pants and denim aren’t going away any time soon. They are fun (and yes they remind me of my younger years). I personally think less is more in terms of pockets. The Citizens of Humanity Magda are my top pick and they come in several different colors.

Maxi Skirts
This summer I mostly wore long skirts and fewer shorts. Therefore I definitely plan to dip my toe into denim maxi skirts. These are the few that have caught my eye to try.

I’m a sucker for most things Reformation and this one is cute!

I have not tried this one but the reviews are amazing and I plan to try it. I like that it has a lot of room to move.

Final Thoughts
I’ve learned I much prefer trying new things at home, where I can style things with the rest of my closet, sit, stretch, and get a really good feel of what makes me happy.
My new methodology is buy slow and return fast. So I will keep a wish list of stuff on my radar (like I’ve done above) and keep going back to them, eliminating things as I lose interest. Then I try my favorites only after I’ve considered for a good amount of time.
Expert Tip
Make sure you style a new item before you make a decision of yes or no. That means trying with a few pieces in your closet including shoes and accessories. Take pictures in the mirror and listen to your instincts.
