How To Look Good In Loungewear? 3 Foolproof Steps

Let’s face it, real life involves loungewear. Lots of loungewear. I’m going to give you 3 foolproof steps today on how to look good in loungewear. Luckily it’s so easy to take a loungewear look from frumpy and unpolished to surprisingly chic.

This past weekend, my husband and I had a few appointments and had to leave the house by 3:00. I lost track of time and at 2:30 realized I was still in sweaty gym clothes and had very little time to get myself together. I jumped in the shower, piled on the loungewear, let my hair air dry, and applied my favorite Jones Road Miracle Balm (more below).

The result? Effortlessly stylish and comfortable.

Step 1: A Good Foundation

Start with a good foundation. You can never go wrong with a sleek black legging and good white tee. We talk about it repeatedly but our wardrobes do not function without good foundation pieces, and these are two must-haves.

My Favorite Black Leggings

I’m a sucker for Vuori’s leggings and have several styles in black. My favorite are the daily legging because of the tie at the waist, it just adds a little something. Annoyingly Vuori’s stock is really low right now, but I’m betting there will  be restocks any minute.

If you prefer a jogger, the Vuori performance joggers are a fan favorite (and we both have these in several colors). I would style these the exact same way. And note, they are also available in a longer length. Tammy and I both like to size up 1 in the performance joggers but are TTS in the leggings.

My Favorite White Tees

A quality short sleeve and long sleeve white tee are absolute wardrobe must-haves – a top 5 wardrobe staple. Tammy talked about this a bit here, 2 Things Every Woman Should Own by 40. Both of these run TTS, but in the Goldie, if you prefer a slouchier fit I’d go up one. These are pricey but last forever. I wash on delicate and hang them to dry.

✅ Style Tip!

This is super important and makes a world of difference…give that tee a slight tuck in the front. It’s such a small thing but so important if you want to look polished. When it doubt, always show the waist!

Step 2: Add Stylish Shoes

The next step in making loungewear look polished and chic is adding a stylish shoe. And of course, when it comes to loungewear, sneakers are our favorite. I’ve been living in these Saucony sneakers – under $100 and impossibly comfortable. Size up by 1/2, they do run short!

✅ Style Tip!

I love to pair my sneakers with a similarly colored sock – yep, showing your socks is officially stylish now. No more pretending we don’t wear socks – haha!

Tammy and I just published an article with our Top 5 Effortlessly Chic Sneakers. And any of these would look great with leggings and a tee.

Non-Sneaker Favorites

You could easily slip on a pair of slides – like our favorite Hermès Oran dupes, which Tammy recently reviewed. Or a pair of loafers would also be ultra stylish. Rachel recently splurged on the forever-cool Gucci loafers. These things are worth every penny and basically a year round shoe. More soon.

Step 3: Accessorize!

When it comes to elevating a loungewear look, it’s really all in the details. It was chilly this day, so I am wearing cozier pieces, but I’ll give you guys some ideas for Spring weather as well.

Top It Off!

The right topper makes all the difference. Tammy and I joke that I’m not sure what I did before my camel Anine Bing Dylan coat. I seriously live in it – my BEST purchase of 2021 by a mile (TTS). And if you’re in a climate that is already enjoying Spring-like weather, the J.Crew trench would be amazing over loungewear.

Lastly, I adore my Levi’s trucker denim jacket for wearing over loungewear. It is a bit oversized and works so well over leggings. It’s my go-to for a casual loungewear look.

The Details

Elevate your look with the right accessories. I love adding these bold cat eye Celine sunglasses to a super casual look for a bit of drama.

I just recently purchased this Phillip Lim bag – I searched for the perfect black bag forever. Full review coming soon! I love that the strap can be worn long as a crossbody or you can double it and wear as a shoulder bag. It is such a quality bag but half the price of most designer bags with the same look. I’m not a huge fan of blingy designer logos and adore its understated elegance.

✅ Style Tip!

When talking about how to look good in loungewear it’s important to touch on contrast. Here, I was wearing black leggings with a camel coat so opted for a gray scarf and sneakers. If you look at the capsules at the end of this article, you will also note there is a contrast of colors in each of them. Another way to add contrast is high/low or dressy/casual. For example, a tailored coat with sneakers. Or a nicer bag and sunglasses with a denim jacket. Contrast is the key to stylizing an outfit.

We love our Marla Aaron Jewelry – see our full article, and this little brass cuffling is one of my newer additions (and it’s also affordable). It’s subtle but definitely adds style to an outfit.

This Jones Road Miracle Balm is also on my list to review. It’s my latest beauty product addiction, and the perfect product for a no-makeup look. It’s what I’ve been reaching for most days now, just add it to your cheeks, eyelids, and lips for a dewy natural glow. Swipe on a little mascara and you’re ready to go! I have the colors Dusty Rose and Tawny but am excited to try some others.

A denim jacket is the perfect third piece for Spring. Effortlessly throw it over your loungewear for a more polished look. We also adore a fresh white sneaker for Spring, and here I added a pop of color with the hat for a little fun.

A trench coat makes everything chic – seriously, throw it over anything and you’ll automatically look put together. I love the juxtaposition of the checked Vans (very casual, street style) with the ultra feminine and tailored trench coat.

A trench coat and a loafer? We’re talking French girl style now. Is it possible for loungewear to be “dressy”? This is edging fairly close in our opinion. Also, this is a favorite pair of sunglasses. I appreciate the tortoise that softens the black. And here, I like the subtle pattern of these sunglasses with the very basic colors in this capsule for a bit of interest.
