4 Wardrobe Staples That Are Effortlessly Chic

We are all about chic wardrobe staples. In particular, we work to build our wardrobe around the timeless and easy classics that every wardrobe needs.

You may notice Rachel and I both have a lot of the same or similar items. It’s true…we both influence each other heavily! And it’s a huge part of how we found each other — we were both regularly posting the same things. Who knew back then where it would all lead, and I’m so thankful it did!

However, we are purposely trying to branch out a little bit so that we can show different brands and styles, both for ourselves and for you guys!

1) Wardrobe Staples – Oversized Button Down Shirt

Not long ago, Rachel posted about her “ride-or-die” white button down shirt, by Frank & Eileen. It’s absolute white-shirt perfection. If I wasn’t trying to push myself to try some new styles and brands, that would have been mine! But I like a challenge…it keeps me from getting bored!

I ended up researching a ton, but kept seeing rave reviews of the Citizens of Humanity Kayla shirt. I ordered it from one of my favorite stores, Revolve.com (2 day free shipping, and I utilize Free Happy Returns at my local Fedex, so easy)!

I already have an old Rag & Bone white button down that is more fitted, so I knew I wanted an oversized fit this time, and bonus, oversized button downs are totally trending right now.

What really attracted me to this one is the sleeves. The shirt has a couple buttons so that you can roll them up, button the sleeve higher, and fold the cuff out — hard to explain, but super chic looking, in my opinion!

Sizing note on Kayla shirt: Mine is small and it’s plenty big. I probably could have sized down to XS, but just remember it is meant to have an oversized fit. You can see from the side view the fullness in the back.

2) Wardrobe Staples – Cropped Straight Jeans

These are the Agolde Riley jeans in colorway Whiplash, which are one of Rachel’s favorites. I was recently looking for a more fitted jean that wasn’t skinny, and Rachel insisted these would fit the bill perfectly! She was right — they are great.

So many of my jeans right now are the baggier style, and when I’m wearing a baggier shirt, I prefer a more fitted jean most of the time. Also, I have boots that look better with a more fitted cropped denim — my new chelsea lug boots, for example. These work perfectly with them.

If you are still holding tight to your skinny jeans but want to branch out even just a tiny bit, these straight jeans are a great way to do that while still staying pretty close to your comfort zone. They also have a great high waist that we both gravitate to.

Confession…I like them so much that I ordered a pair in washed black, and I am excited to play around with them also!

Sizing note: These run TTS for me, and I have them in my normal size of 26.

3) Wardrobe Staples – Taupe or Cognac Boots

Taupe and cognac boots are up there with black as wardrobe staples. I have way too many black boots (believe me, ugh!) but I end up wearing my taupe and cognac boots as much as black. They are great when you want to break up an all black outfit, and I wear them a lot with my light or medium denim all fall and winter long.

I also love having a lighter colored boot to wear with my white and ivory tops. It provides such a nice balance. A light colored boot can feel more casual as well, especially one with a low heel, like Rachel’s favorite Rag & Bone Rover boot.

While my Marc Fisher Alva boots have a slightly higher heel, I have been wearing these for well over a year and find them so incredibly comfortable and easy!

We are going to do a post later this week with all of our boot recommendations for fall and winter, but in the meantime, these are a couple of our very favorites.

Sizing note: I usually size up 1/2 to 8 in all my boots. I like having extra room in the toes and to allow for thicker socks.

4) Wardrobe Staples – Statement Bag

We do love our statement bags. We wear so many mix and match neutrals, that we like to add a little edginess with a good statement bag. My animal print clutch is old (purchased a few years ago from Nordstrom), but many of our favorites come from Clare V. and these are our workhorse bags. The price point is reasonable and the quality is high allowing us to use the bags for many years.

Animal print is an easy way to add some interest and texture to an otherwise simple outfit. We tend to choose our bags based on them having something unique or interesting about them.

These are some of our current favorites. Rachel has been wearing the heck out of hers, as you’ve probably seen on the site. If I weren’t trying to branch out a little, I’d buy it as well…the dangers of loving each other’s style!

Take a look in your closet and decide which bag(s) will coordinate best with your current wardrobe.

Did I mention how happy I am we can finally start wearing all the jeans and boots? It’s my favorite season, by far!
