Can we discuss how to feel confident in your clothes? Every single person has felt uncomfortable in their skin or clothes. It is especially a common problem for women, but at almost 50, I’m over it.
This is my first official post as an independent blogger – yikes! I’ve spent the past year and a half working closely with Rachel so this is going to be a huge transition. I will miss her so much and the sisterhood we shared in doing this as a team!
But, I really do adore this. It’s a lot of work, absolutely, but I appreciate having something that’s mine, especially after the lull of months at home during the early Covid days…those were ugly times for me!
I also love sharing my love of fashion and supporting other women in their process! And my love for photography certainly plays a huge part.
I guess that means you guys are stuck with me…if you’ll still have me, ha!
How to Feel Confident In Your Clothes
This is a topic near and dear to my heart, and why I love fashion blogging. My goal is to keep only those pieces that I truly love and make me feel confident.
I also love helping you guys through the same process! It’s so worth having clothes that you are excited to wear.
I’ve followed Angie at Youlookfab.com for a number of years and she wrote an article that really hit home for me. If Not Now, When? It’s a must read, in my opinion!
How to Feel Confident In Your Clothes
1) Dress To Be Happy
What you wear has a huge impact on your mood. Last year, I wrote The Relationship of Clothes and Mood, and it sure is true for me. Don’t let fashion trends dictate what you are supposed to wear; rather get in tune with how you feel when you put something on.
That means that you might like something on me but hate it on yourself, and that’s okay! Just pay attention to those feelings.

2) If It’s Not A Hell Yes, It’s a No
My friends all know this is my favorite saying. If you are on the fence, it’s probably not for you. I do try to make sure I properly style something before I make that decision but once you do that, trust your instinct. Even if someone else loves it on you, you are the one that has to wear it.
It’s also helpful to try something on a couple times before removing the tags, just to be sure!
And don’t forget to try it on with other pieces in your closet to make sure it works with other things! There are items I’ve seriously loved that didn’t work with anything else in my closet so I returned.

3) Color Is So Important
Left: Blazer (TTS – 6) | Jeans (sized up) | Sandals here and here (sized down 1/2) | Bag | Camisole (similar)
Right: Dress (up to M) | Denim Jacket (up to M) | Sneakers | Bag
I have never officially had my colors done, though it’s on my to do list. Even though I feel pretty confident in what colors I should wear, I do think it would be fun to get an official analysis. Who knows, maybe I’m missing out on a color that would be really great on me!
Sometimes we love the style of an item so much that we overlook the color, when color is actually more important than style.

4) Fit Is Equally Important
I like to put items through the ringer before deciding if I’ll keep it.
With jeans – are they too tight, too loose, the right spot on the waist (no thank you plumber’s crack)!
With tops – I have a long torso and cannot stand shirts that are even a tiny bit too short.
Move around, sit, kneel, squat…actually wear them around for a while to determine if they are a good and comfortable fit.
And don’t overlook the importance of a good tailor. Sometimes a tiny alteration can make all the difference in the world.

5) Keep It Simple
Left: Shirt (TTS S) | Jeans (up 1 to 27) | Belt | Bag | Shoes (TTS)
Middle: top (up to 8) | jeans (up to 27) | boots (37.5) | sunglasses | coat (similar)
Right: tshirt (similar, M) | skirt (TTS, S) | bag | earrings | sandals (see sandals article)
My last rule is one of the most important…keep it simple.
That means that the majority of my closet consists of solid basics that mix and match cohesively. Then it’s so easy to add in a few interesting items to form a really fabulous wardrobe.

Final Thoughts
For a long time I thought I couldn’t (shouldn’t) show my arms because they weren’t stick thin…I know, I know. Thankfully I had a good friend help me see the nonsense in that.
When I first saw the above picture I thought I looked pregnant. Admittedly I usually quickly delete those images…old habits die hard. But honestly I look at this image and I’m able to face the old demons.
None of us have perfect bodies. Who cares! I love this dress and I feel like a million bucks in it, and that’s all that matters.
Wear the clothes that make you feel as fabulous as you truly are!
