Is double denim in fashion? Always! Denim on denim, when done right, has this effortless way of looking chic and cool. And in our opinion, it’s completely timeless. While there are no rules regarding doubling up your denim, we do have some tricks that we often fall back on, which I’ll include here as ‘style tips’. Plus, my new double denim outfit refresh for Spring that I’m crazy excited about.

We’ve been wearing the L’Agence Janelle jacket for a few years now (see it here and here), and it’s an absolute classic. One of our best purchases by far, and I’ll continue to reach for it a ton. It is however more of a fitted denim jacket, and I found myself craving something looser and oversized – more 90s vibes! Yes, I admit it.
I scoured all of our favorite retailers and found a few I liked but kept coming back to the Anine Bing Rory Jacket. What makes the Anine Bing Rory Jacket so special?
- It’s the perfect wash – light but not too light, with just the right amount of variation to make it interesting.
- Mild distressing which gives it vintage vibes without looking like I borrowed it from my teenagers (I didn’t want over-the-top distressing).
- Seriously beautiful silver hardware that takes this jacket up a few notches, especially in person.
Sizing note: I am wearing an XS and it’s intentionally oversized. I recommend taking your true size or sizing down one if you want a slightly less loose fit. Also it’s worth noting that this jacket relaxes a bit with wear. So if at first it appears boxy (or ‘state puff’ as I described to Tammy), wear it around the house for a few hours…it keeps getting better.

Styling Oversized Jackets
Styling oversized denim jackets is surprisingly easy. They looks great thrown over a dress, shorts, leggings, trousers, and denim as seen here. (More style inspo coming soon!) When pairing an oversized denim jacket with jeans or pants, I prefer the pant to have a slimmer silhouette to balance out the jacket. A few other denim styles that I tried with this jacket and also loved, here…(And note for those baggier jean styles, we’d go with a more fitted denim jacket like the L’Agence Janelle jacket.)

Monochrome with a Pop!

This striped tee by KULE is a workhorse piece, and one of the first things I ever blogged about – see my full KULE review. I adore how the royal blue stripe, denim jacket, and jeans are all the same tone giving this look a chic monochrome style. While these pieces are all very casual, the monochrome tones definitely elevate this look.
And we can’t forget the pop! I feel like I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but this year is truly all about COLOR! If you do one thing to update your look, I strongly suggest one vivid accessory – either a bag or shoes. Coordinating Denim Washes
I personally think this is what trips people up most when trying to put together a denim on denim look…how do you coordinate the washes? Honestly there are no rules, and you can absolutely throw a light colored jacket over darker denim (or vice versa). However, a foolproof way I’ve learned to style double denim is pairing similar washes…they do not need to be exact, but just similar enough. At the bottom of this article, I’ll include some past double denim outfits that I’ve worn for more inspiration.

Same outfit as above, I just swapped the heels for my ride-or-die loafers and new favorite bag. I adore the black strap on this bag – it’s such a small detail, but magically ties in the black. I also like to switch out the strap to this chain one (and by the way, chain bag straps and belts are majorly on trend this season). I’ve been carrying this bag non-stop since I bought it, and it makes every single outfit so much better.
Other Casual Shoes That Would Work Here
These are my favorite white sneakers – see our Top 5 Effortlessly Chic Sneakers, and a pair everyone needs. And Tammy discovered these Patricia Green slides which are shockingly similar to the much more expensive Hermès Oran sandals (see her review). She raved about them so much I ordered them, and I am truly blown away. They may be the most comfortable sandals I’ve ever put on my feet.

If the oversized denim jacket trend isn’t your thing, Tammy and I both adore the L’Agence Janelle jacket shown here. It is a more fitted jacket but incredibly soft and stretchy – almost feeling more like a cardigan than denim. I reach for this jacket a ton and often carry it with me on Summer evenings.

I’ve waxed poetic about this denim shirt so many times – you can see it here and here. And last year Tammy and I both wore one pair of shorts all Summer long – by Moussy. This exact pair is no longer available, but I linked a very similar pair. And lastly, my sandals are gone, but I linked a nude pair by Frame that I recently tried in orange (mostly sold out in orange). I’m debating keeping them (my only hesitation is they are pricey for an orange shoe…decisions!) They are insanely comfortable and the heel height is very walkable. A good nude Summer sandal is hard to find, and these are fabulous.

As much as I want it to be Spring, it’s in the 20s and snowing in Denver currently. If it’s still chilly where you are too, this is a a fabulous late Winter / early Spring look. One of the brilliant things about an oversized denim jacket is that you can fit a cozy sweater underneath it! And remember what I said about this green bag – makes.every.outfit.better.
