I’m on a stripes kick, what can I say? But honestly they are just so interesting and when I’m feeling uninspired, I often turn to them.
My brain always wants to know the “why” behind everything, and after a little research, I discovered that the history of stripes has quite the sinister and rebellious background!
“Servants and court jesters wore striped cloth; so did prostitutes, madmen, and criminals, not voluntarily but by official orders. The bold, broad, contrasting stripes of their garments seemed to stand for neither-this-nor-that, ambivalence, ambiguity, and a realm of unclear and violated boundaries.”
-John Major on LoveToKnow
Is it any surprise that I like stripes even more now? There’s much more to the story and this article gives a quick run-down of the captivating history.
One huge benefit of stripes is they are timeless. I’ve owned this sweater for three years and I will have (and love) it for many more. They are also just so easy to style.
Friday I will be doing an in-depth article of pattern mixing, in particular the very easy match-up of stripes and animal print. In the meantime, I love how my leopard bag gives this simple look a bit more of an edge.
As my sweater is old, I’ve searched for all the high contrast striped sweaters I’d consider if I needed another. The Toteme one is pricey but so ridiculously gorgeous.
My Clare V. Foldover Clutch is available in stores (and also through chat) but I’m including a few other animal prints that are currently part of Clare V.’s end of season sale. You can see the entire sale here. This is pretty much our favorite handbag brand!
Mother Denim never fails to impress and they have so many fabulous new styles lately. We’ve already tried a lot of them, and these Mother Study Hover in colorway Peaches and Scream are pretty dang fabulous. So fabulous, in fact, that Rachel also had to place an order when she saw them. They are TTS (I am wearing 26 and Rachel 25).
